Pointe Shoes

Pointe shoes boast a rich tradition that dates back to the French Revolution, when dancers wore shoes without heels similar to the pointe styles available today. There are various models that accommodate different toe lengths, arches and foot strength. However, all have a box within the front of the shoe to support toes during pointe work. The shank has a rigid material to stiffen the sole for arch support. Classic ballet pointe shoes are often finished with a satin fabric, while some contemporary versions are covered in canvas. Options include white, black and popular shades of pink. With proper-fitting pointe shoes, it is possible for dancers to dance on the tips of their toes for extended periods of time.
